Birpartap Saini’s ultimate goal is to build a larger supermarket at the corner of Miller and Colescott Streets in Shelbyville.

To do this, Saini had to have additional land behind his Valero gas station rezoned into a general business area.

On Monday, the Planning Commission at City Hall submitted a positive recommendation to the Shelbyville City Council to rezone 713 S. Miller St. from single-family residential (R-1) to commercial (R-1).

Saini, who does business under the name K&B Partners LLC, said he wants to build a larger supermarket on the property to better serve the local community.

Traffic and safety concerns have been raised about the busy intersection at Miller and Colescott Streets, just south of which is the Shelbyville Boys and Girls Club and Girls Inc.

Planning Commission member Denny Harrold said the application presented to the commission on Monday was only for the rezoning of the adjacent property. No site plan was submitted for a larger supermarket.

Traffic and safety concerns could be more fully addressed at this time.

The rezoning of Miller St. requires final approval from the City Council, which next meets on September 4 at 6 p.m.
