Vassar-Warner Home in Poughkeepsie closes after 153 years

Vassar-Warner Home in Poughkeepsie closes after 153 years

In Poughkeepsie, the Vassar-Warner Home has been a much-celebrated piece of city history since it opened in 1871. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only nonprofit senior living facility in Dutchess County. In late July of this year, the facility announced that it would be closing its doors in the fall due to numerous operational challenges.

The historic building, which includes a senior living home for people ages 55 and older, as well as an assisted living program and respite care services, is working hard to relocate its current 35 residents to neighboring facilities that can best meet the seniors’ needs. The New York State Department of Health has approved Vassar-Warner Home’s plans to move its residents and families to new homes no later than October 14 of this year.

“It is with great sadness and regret that I share this news,” says Ericka Von Salews, executive director of Vassar-Warner Home. “Vassar-Warner Home is a beloved part of our community and a much-needed local resource. We will remain open until every resident is settled into their new home, and we will do everything possible to make this transition smooth for our residents and their loved ones, as well as the compassionate team that works here.”

The facility, which currently houses 18 individuals in independent living and 17 seniors in assisted living, is disheartened to have to cease its services. The closure comes after repeated attempts to recruit help privately and at the state and local levels, along with other challenges such as unsustainable Medicaid reimbursement rates, occupancy barriers and rising costs that have made it impossible to operate the home.

“The Board of Directors of our home and the Foundation would like to thank the 34 dedicated staff members who provide outstanding, award-winning care to our residents, including Executive Director Ericka Von Salews, who has successfully led the Vassar-Warner Home for the past eight years,” said Ellen C. Smyth, Chair of the Vassar-Warner Home Board of Trustees.

The Vassar-Warner Home at 52 South Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie will close its doors on October 14 for the first time since 1871.
