Victim of fatal shooting near Airport Road identified

(COLORADO SPRINGS) – The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released the identity of a man killed in a shooting near Airport Road on Wednesday, August 14, that left three other people injured.

According to CSPD, the El Paso County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 42-year-old Leroy Pruitt Jr. While the medical examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death, Pruitt’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

Officers originally responded to a reported shooting in the 300 block of Ellers Grove, a neighborhood west of Airport Road and South Powers Boulevard, shortly after 5:30 p.m. on August 14. When they arrived, officers found three people with gunshot wounds. One of them, Pruitt, was pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person with a gunshot wound was found in the 400 block of Flyway Point.

According to CSPD, everyone involved in the shooting has been identified. This was the 27th homicide in the city of Colorado Springs in 2024. At the same time in 2023, there were 18 homicides.
