BROOK PARK, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A kitchen fire could have left a family homeless for six to eight months.

And the culprit is so surprising that you have to see the video to believe it.

“If we didn’t have it on camera, it would be a pretty far-fetched story; you wouldn’t really believe it,” said homeowner Chris DiLuzio.

DiLuzio says he was at work on Wednesday when he received a call he will never forget: The fire department told him his Brook Park house was on fire.

“There was definitely panic and fear at the same time because they said they only found one dog. My first thought was that my son, my niece and my mother-in-law were here,” DiLuzio said.

Fortunately, no one was home, but DiLuzio says the video from the kitchen security camera tells the whole story.

The owner said the puppy was trying to get a snack and accidentally started the fire in the kitchen.

The video shows Harvey, one of the family’s dogs, jumping on a chair and trying to grab a snack from the stove.

As Harvey reaches for the bowl, he accidentally starts the oven.

A few moments later a fire breaks out and the kitchen is ablaze.

“He’s just fat and hungry,” DiLuzio said.

DiLuzio says all the pets were rescued and the fire was put out, but now he, his wife and their six children will have to leave the house for months as repairs begin in preparation for the new school year.

And of course not everything can be replaced.

“We have lost many irreplaceable things that no longer have any value,” said Diluzio.

There is an online fundraiser for the family to help with expenses while they wait for the damage to be repaired.
