Vikings’ Justin Jefferson gives injury update after leaving game against 49ers

Minnesota Vikings All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson left Sunday’s 23-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers with a hamstring injury. Jefferson left the game in the fourth quarter after sustaining the injury on a running play and was escorted off the field.

Jefferson spoke to reporters after the game and said his injury was not serious.

“I feel good. We got the win…I’m not seriously injured,” Jefferson told reporters after the game, via ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry. “So that’s the most important thing now. It’s just a matter of getting in the training room and making sure my body is OK for next week, and then I’ll be ready next Sunday.”

After the game, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said Jefferson accidentally collided with 49ers linebacker Fred Warner as Warner attempted to launch a running attack, resulting in his injury.

“It was a quadriceps contusion… it’s pretty sore, but he’s back up and moving,” Kevin O’Connell said at his post-match press conference. “We’ll treat that thing and hopefully he’ll take it day by day and we’ll see what his condition is next week.”

The Vikings were already without tight end TJ Hockeson and wide receiver Jordan Addison, who was out with an ankle injury. Even without all three of their top playmakers at the end of a game that was only one point ahead, the Vikings still managed to pull out a win against the defending NFC champions.

With their number of receivers limited, the Vikings hope to have Jefferson back for next week’s game against the Houston Texans.

Before his injury, Jefferson made one of the most important plays of the game in the second quarter. After the Vikings defense made a stop on fourth down and held on to a 3-0 lead, the Vikings took possession.

Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold threw a 97-yard touchdown pass to Jefferson from his own end zone. Jefferson got past two 49ers defenders and caught the ball near the 50-yard line before running past the 49ers defensive backs for the touchdown.

Jefferson finished the game with four catches for 133 yards and the touchdown. He also surpassed the 6,000-yard career receiving mark, tying Hall of Fame receiver Lance Alworth as the fastest player to reach 6,000 yards in his career.

In just his fifth NFL season, Jefferson is already halfway to reaching 10,000 receiving yards in his career. He has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in each of his four NFL seasons, including in 2023, despite missing seven games with a hamstring injury.
