Vikings move up NFL rankings after victory over 49ers

The Vikings made a strong statement after defeating the reigning NFC champions, the 49ers, in Week 2. With Sam Darnold at quarterback, some national experts are still skeptical about whether Minnesota is a legitimate playoff contender, but others are.

We’ve compiled a number of power rankings from various media sources and compiled them into one comprehensive list. Let’s see where the Vikings and their NFC North opponents stand…

Josh Kendall of The Athletic seems to be banking on Darnold and the Vikings. He was the best after their Week 1 win over the Giants, but he believes they took it a step further after beating the 49ers.

Pete Prisco and CBS Sports were very impressed with what they saw on Sunday. After climbing 13 spots in their rankings, no national media outlet is higher positioned on the Vikings than CBS Sports.

“Although it’s early, the Vikings have a legitimate top-10 passing offense and a defense that has allowed fewer points than only the Steelers, who have played the Denver Broncos, and the Chargers, who have played both the Raiders and Panthers,” SI’s Connor Orr wrote. “Brian Flores is forging his way back into the head coach’s chair so far with two memorable performances against great offensive minds.”

NFL.com’s Eric Edholm moved the Vikings up five spots, but he still doesn’t seem to accept them as a legitimate playoff team. He called Sunday a “coaching gem” from Brian Flores, but ranked them behind teams like the Steelers and Jets.

Frank Schwab gave credit to the Vikings, saying, “There aren’t many better coaching staffs in the NFL” and that Kevin O’Connell and Brian Flores are the main reason for their 2-0 start.

ESPN only moved the Vikings up one spot after their Week 1 win, but they have now climbed 11 spots to 11th. Jalen Nailor’s performance in Week 2 was highlighted as the team’s “most important backup/support player.”

Mike Florio was the worst on the Vikings after their Week 1 win, but he moved them up 13 spots in his rankings to 11th. He called them the “worst team in the division on paper,” but they’re all alone in first place.

Below you can see where the rest of the NFC North ranked in the rankings compiled above. For clarity, we’ve averaged the rankings into one number. It wasn’t a good week for the Lions and Bears, who both had disappointing performances and fell down the rankings. As for the Packers, they proved they can be successful, as Jordan Love has recovered from his injury and dramatically improved their rankings.
