Vikings place JJ McCarthy on the injured list and sign Matt Corral

The Vikings have officially placed JJ McCarthy on the injured list, formally ending his 2024 season.

After McCarthy underwent knee surgery earlier this week, head coach Kevin O’Connell announced that McCarthy would be out for the year.

However, McCarthy is expected to remain with the team for the entire season, making this practically a redshirt year for the young quarterback.

Minnesota selected McCarthy as the number 10 pick. Sam Darnold is now expected to be the team’s starter in 2024.

To replace McCarthy on the roster, the Vikings signed former Panthers third-round pick Matt Corral.

The Ole Miss product entered the league in 2022 but never played in a regular season game. Carolina released him in late August of last year and the Patriots signed him – but Corral was then placed on the exempt/left squad list in early September. He was released and was expected to sign with New England’s practice squad but never returned to the team.

Corral then joined the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL and appeared in four games with three starts for the club. As a starter, he posted a 3-0 record and completed 58 percent of his total throws for 494 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
