Virginia (3-1) defeated Coastal Carolina (3-1) 43-24 on Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina, in the first-ever meeting between these two teams. Coastal Carolina loses the ball on a down and Virginia runs out the clock, securing the 43-24 victory. UVA improves its season record to 3-1 before the off week.

Tony Muskett comes in for Virginia. The Cavaliers get a couple of first downs, the first being a nice third-down scramble by Muskett, but then they punt for the first time since the first quarter.

Led by backup quarterback Noah Kim, Coastal Carolina pulls off an eight-play, 75-yard drive that takes just over three minutes. Kim finds Senika McKie for a 41-yard gain. A few plays later, Kim runs left and throws a pass to Bryson Graves in the back of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.

Virginia’s running game has dominated the day. Now the passing offense comes back to the fore as Anthony Colandrea finds an open Malachi Fields in the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown, capping a six-play, 65-yard run for the Cavaliers to extend their lead. UVA tries for two points, but Colandrea’s two-point pass is intercepted by Tobias Fletcher. Virginia leads 43-17.

Coastal tries an option on the right side on fourth and 1 and Virginia botches it. Chico Bennett Jr. knocks Vasko down and loses the ball. The UVA defense makes the crucial stop to force the turnover.

That ends the third quarter. Coastal Carolina has a fourth and one attempt at the UVA 31-yard line to start the fourth quarter.

Virginia drives the ball to the Coastal 33-yard line and tries fourth and fifth, but Colandrea is sacked by Joah Cash, giving Coastal Carolina the ball back. It would have been a 50-yard field goal attempt for Bettridge had the Cavaliers chosen not to try.

Coastal tears Virginia open for the second straight game with a big play when Vasko finds a completely free Kendall Karr for a 65-yard catch and runs to UVA’s 10-yard line. This time the Chanticleers score. On third down and goal from the 3, Ethan Vasko calls his own number and finds the end zone for the touchdown. Coastal gains 75 yards in four plays to make it a 20-point game.

Virginia capitalizes again on a Coastal turnover. Xavier Brown runs for seven yards and then tears down the left sideline 75 yards to the 10-yard line. Coastal gives UVA a few more chances with defensive penalties and finally Kobe Pace gets into the end zone and scores a 1-yard touchdown. Virginia tries a two-point conversion and Colandrea finds Chris Tyree, but Malachi Fields is flagged for offensive pass interference on a pick play. Bettridge knocks through the PAT after the penalty and UVA leads 37-10.

Ethan Vasko finds Tray Taylor, who runs 58 yards down the right sideline into the UVA red zone. Virginia’s defense does a great job after that as Christian Washington is stopped just short of the line on fourth-and-1 by Antonio Clary and Kam Robinson to win. UVA leaves the field without allowing any points.

Virginia puts together a solid drive after the halftime break, Tyler Neville catches and runs for 19 yards, and then Kobe Pace runs a couple of times to get into Coastal territory. Anthony Colandrea gets sacked and his third attempt ends up just short of the uprights, so Will Bettridge trots out, who hits a wobbler that just makes it through the goal posts for a 45-yard field goal. It wasn’t pretty, but Bettridge is now 3/3 on the day.

The Cavaliers extended their lead by three points thanks to a 47-yard field goal by Will Bettridge, tying a career high. Virginia goes into halftime with a 17-point lead and the Cavaliers receive the ball to start the second half.

Virginia forces a three-and-out from Coastal Carolina. Kam Butler sacks Vasko on first down and Jonas Sanker makes a nice play on third down to force the punt. UVA gets the ball back and has a chance to extend its lead before halftime.

Virginia continues to have success running the ball. Noah Vaughn catches a six-yard pass and runs for three more on the next play. Kobe Pace returns from injury and runs two runs for four yards each. Xavier Brown finds a gap for 16 yards and then Colandrea calls his own number and runs 25 yards into the red zone. Sage Ennis is injured on the play and is carried off the field.

Colandrea throws a block to Tyler Neville, who runs 12 yards to the Coastal 5-yard line. A holding penalty pushes Virginia back to the 15-yard line, but Noah Vaughn gets it all back with a 13-yard run. Two plays later, Brosterhous shoves the ball in under pressure from the Grady Bunch, his second rushing touchdown of the game. That’s a 10-play, 75-yard run for Virginia, which takes a 24-10 lead.

Coastal Carolina responds with an 8-play, 90-yard run. Jam Jackson committed a pass interference penalty on third down and Tray Taylor completed a reverse run for 22 yards. On fourth-and-2, Coastal keeps its offense on the field and Ethan Vasko throws a perfect ball to Jameson Tucker in the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown. Tucker beat Kempton Shine to score Coastal’s first touchdown of the game.

Virginia slowly gets into a rhythm in its running game. Kobe Pace runs 5, 4, and 4 yards for a first down. Pace then gets 13 yards and another first down and then Xavier Brown finds open field for a 24-yard run to the Coastal 24-yard line. That’s the last play of the opening quarter and Virginia leads 14-3.

Pace is injured while running and is carried off the field. Virginia scores on fourth and 1 with the Grady Bunch, but the drive ends in a field goal. Will Bettridge scores from 24 yards to give Virginia a 17-3 lead, completing a 13-play, 64-yard drive that lasted seven minutes and 45 seconds.

Virginia’s defense forces another three-and-out. For some reason, Coastal Carolina doesn’t try to run the ball with its 13th nationally ranked offense. Vasko’s pass on third down is intercepted by Jonas Sanker and Coastal punts it away.

Virginia takes advantage of good field position and finally uses the running game. Xavier Brown gets the ball and finds a gap on the left side, where he sprints 29 yards inside the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Grady Brosterhous comes in and finds the end zone on a QB keeper for a five-yard touchdown run. That’s Brosterhous’ second touchdown of the season.

Virginia stops Christian Washington on a running play, setting him up for 3rd and 12. Ethan Vasko’s pass is deflected in the air and Antonio Clary catches the ball on a diving catch for Virginia’s first interception of the season. UVA takes over at the Coastal Carolina 35-yard line.

Virginia manages to complete three passes for the second straight game as Colandrea throws three incomplete passes in a row. It looks like UVA is going to give up the run again. Sparks pushes his punt out of bounds and only manages a 28-yard punt.

Coastal’s punt returner falls and fails to catch the punt, making it a 60-yard punt to Daniel Sparks. The UVA defense forces Coastal into a three-and-out and the UVA offense has good field position on Coastal’s side of midfield.

Virginia goes three-and-out on its second offensive possession when Chris Tyree and Anthony Colandrea are stopped for a short gain and then Colandrea brings down Malachi Fields on 3rd-and-8.

Virginia takes advantage of the Coastals’ fumble and scores a touchdown after just three plays. On the third and third attempt from the 7, Anthony Colandrea finds Malachi Fields in the front left corner of the end zone and Fields catches the ball for the touchdowns. UVA strikes first on the road.

Coastal Carolina returner Tray Taylor tries to catch Daniel Sparks’ kickoff on impact and loses the ball. Eli Wood recovers the ball for Virginia and the Cavaliers have an early chance in the red zone, taking over at the Coastal 13-yard line.
