Virginia Natural Gas reminds you at Coast Live to dig with caution

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — Morgan Chase of Virginia Natural Gas visits Coast Live ahead of Virginia 811 Day on Aug. 11 to remind viewers of the importance of digging with CAUTION:

  • Call or click before you dig: Before beginning any outdoor digging, customers should call 811 or visit va811.com at least three days in advance to request underground utility marking. Requests to locate underground utility lines, including natural gas, electric, water, sewer, telephone and cable lines, can be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is free of charge.
  • Plan the time required for marking: After contacting Virginia 811, wait until underground utility lines are marked before beginning digging (approximately three business days). Locators mark the approximate location of buried lines with color-coded spray paint, flags or stakes that correspond to the specific utility line. The color used for natural gas is yellow.
  • Note the markings: Use hand digging tools only to carefully clear the area around a utility line if you must dig near site markers.
  • Dig carefully: Make sure the markings remain visible during the project. If the lines are damaged or removed, customers should contact Virginia 811 to have the lines re-marked.

Paid for by Virginia Natural Gas.
