Volleyball recap: Litchfield Dragons open with 2nd place – West Central Tribune

RUSH CITY – The Litchfield volleyball team took second place at the Rush City Invitational on Friday.

The Dragons entered the group stage 2-1 and advanced to the championship in a tiebreaker. They started with a 2-0 win over Chisago Lakes before losing to Rock Ridge in straight sets and defeating Pine River-Backus in three sets.

Litchfield lost the championship game against host Rush City 25:14 and 25:13.

Claire Holmgren was the Dragons’ best attacker with 19 kills in the four games. Kierra Lease followed with 17 kills and four blocks. Anna Sorgatz led the team with 51 digs and eight ace serves.

The Dragons open Wright County Conference play at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hutchinson.

Paynesville finished the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Tournament at Howard Lake with a 2-2 record with wins over Melrose and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

Ava Martinson had a Bulldog-best 33 kills and five blocks in the four matches. She also had 23 digs. Grace Roberg had 40 digs and four serving aces. Rayna Spanier had 68 set assists in the tournament.

Paynesville hosts Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
