Walmart apple juice recalled due to arsenic content

Walmart apple juice recalled due to arsenic content

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has just announced an active recall of apple juice sold at Walmart in 27 states and territories. The reason for this is the increased arsenic content of the product.

Affected by this recall is Great Value brand apple juice sold in 8-ounce plastic bottles. These bottles were sold in packs of 6, and approximately 9,535 cases were sold in the following states and regions: Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The recalled apple juice bottles have a best-before date of “DEC2824” printed on them, along with the code CT89-6. The recall was initiated on August 15, so the affected beverages were sold before then. If your product has these details, throw it away immediately or return it to where you purchased it.

Arsenic is a toxic heavy metal that can enter food and beverages through contaminated water, soil, pesticides or industrial processes. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting the consumption of juices, especially apple juice, in the diet of young children, as fruit juice can contain higher levels of arsenic.

While small amounts of heavy metals ingested through food are common and probably harmless, high levels of arsenic can cause arsenic poisoning. Symptoms may include headache, drowsiness, fever, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, life-threatening complications can occur. If you notice any of these symptoms after consuming the recalled apple juice, contact your doctor immediately.
