“Remember I posted about an issue I had at Walmart? I bought a quart of oil for $5 plus change. I didn’t look at the total or wait for the receipt,” the shopper tweeted.

“The next morning I checked my online banking account and was charged $121.00. It showed I had bought a lot of groceries. Nope. Went back and got the credit,” he added.

The buyer said he received a credit.

While customers continue to struggle with inflated prices, companies like Walmart are making record profits.

Consumers say that such errors lead to financial problems.

Average food and beverage prices have increased by 22 to 25 percent over the four years since the pandemic.

In addition, according to Yahoo! Finance, a majority of Americans are worse off financially today than they were before the pandemic began.

In fact, according to the National Bureau of Economic Analysis, corporate profits have made up the largest share of national income for a decade.

Walmart reported quarterly profit of $5.1 billion in May, triple the profit in the same quarter a year earlier.

TAP PROBLEMS

In addition, customers said Walmart made in-store shopping a burden by refusing to accept a popular payment method.

A shopper complained that tap payment was not possible at Walmart.

This means that shoppers cannot pay in-store using their mobile cards or mobile phones.

Instead, shoppers must download the Walmart app and use Walmart Pay as a contactless option.

Walmart Pay works similarly to Apple Pay in that it stores credit, debit and gift cards in the app for shoppers to use.

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon explained on Stratechery with Ben Thompson why stores don’t offer Apple Pay.

Although the use of Apple Pay is an ongoing topic of conversation at the retailer, McMillon stressed, “We want customers to constantly have our app open in the store.”

The app not only helps you find items in the store, but can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the reasons we want people to use our app,” he said.

Consumers felt that they should not have to download an app if they wanted to pay in a certain way.

SMOOTH DANDRUFF

In February, Walmart agreed to a $45 million class action settlement after consumers claimed that Walmart allowed them to purchase certain pre-weighed groceries at a higher price than the lowest price advertised in the store.

The class participating in the lawsuit settlement includes anyone who personally purchased pre-weighed merchandise and pre-packaged citrus fruits at a Walmart store between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024.

As defined in the settlement, “weighted commodities” refers to variable-weight meat, poultry, pork and seafood products that are barcoded with an embedded price and marked by Walmart.

“Packaged citrus fruits” means organically grown oranges, grapefruits, mandarins and navel oranges sold loose in mesh or plastic bags.

Class members alleged that the retailer’s checkout devices artificially inflated the weight of the goods weighed, causing the total price to be higher than the advertised discount.

Consumers worried about price increases said they are now cautious about shopping at Walmart.

Meanwhile, a Walmart customer has left the store angry after he was allegedly followed by staff for not being able to show his receipt.

And another customer abandoned his purchase and left the store due to anti-theft regulations.
