Walmart in Sault unveils new renovations

SAULT STE. MARIE – Local shoppers walked into Walmart this week and found themselves in a new store.

On Friday, the Sault location reopened its doors after months of renovations. The project was more than a year in the planning and began in May, with most of the work being done at night.

Walmart held a grand opening ceremony on Friday with guests including U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman and State Senator John Damoose.

During the ceremony, Walmart recognized over 30 employees who have worked for the company at this location for more than 20 years.

Renovations include new self-checkouts and more staff, a new customer service area, an expanded pharmacy, a new vision center, and modernized electronics, deli and pet departments.

Additionally, several renovations were made to general amenities, including lighting and flooring throughout the store. In addition to the renovations, new services such as delivery and pickup for online shoppers were added.

“Almost every department in this store has been refreshed in some way or another, and our customers will notice the exciting changes as soon as they walk through the door,” said Walmart CEO Alan Sims. “While the renovations offer a fresh new look, the changes and new innovations are intended to make shopping easier for our customers and save them time and money.”

Walmart also announced $14,000 in grants to several local organizations, including the Soo Locks Children’s Museum, Michigan State Police Shop with a Hero, the Sault Soccer Association and others.
