Walmart+ offers Burger King discounts to attract Amazon Prime shoppers

Walmart+ offers Burger King discounts to attract Amazon Prime shoppers

The grocery giant announced Thursday that Walmart+ members will now receive discounts at Burger King as part of a new partnership with the fast-food chain.

This includes 25% off digital orders at Burger King. Starting in September, Walmart+ members can also claim a free Whopper with their order every three months.

“The Burger King benefit is offered to Walmart+ members at no additional cost and is Walmart+’s latest step to provide even more value to its members,” the company said.

But it’s also likely an attempt to lure grocery shoppers away from Amazon Prime and toward Walmart’s membership program, which is massively outshined by its competitor. Walmart+ costs $98 a year plus taxes, while Prime costs $139.

In 2021, Amazon reported having 200 million Prime members worldwide.

Estimates of the number of Walmart+ subscribers vary. The Wall Street Journal reported in August, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the subscription offering had about 8 million subscribers, of which about a million were Walmart employees who were offered free memberships.

In 2023, payments intelligence firm PYMNTS estimated that Walmart+ had around 59 million members in October 2022, while market research firm eMarketer said in 2023 that Walmart+ membership would grow to over 29 million subscribers.

Regardless, there seems to be a consensus that Walmart still has a long way to go to catch up with Amazon.

Walmart did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
