Walmart recalls apple juice in 25 states due to elevated arsenic levels.AP

Walmart is recalling nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice from 25 states because the product contains elevated levels of arsenic.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration upgraded the recall to a Class II after announcing the original recall on August 15, 2024.

According to the FDA, the updated classification means that the product in question could cause health problems but is not likely to cause serious or permanent health damage.

The recall affects 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in the states of Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont and West Virginia.

The affected cases of apple juice were also sold in the territories of Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

Florida-based Refresco Beverages recalled the products after arsenic levels in the juice were found to be above safe limits.

“The health and safety of our customers is always our highest priority,” Walmart spokeswoman Molly Blakeman said in a statement. “We have removed this product from our affected stores and are working with the supplier to investigate the matter.”

The FDA has not disclosed how many illnesses may be linked to the recall, but the levels found in the affected apple juice are so low that the agency does not believe there will be any serious health problems.
