School is starting up again in Massachusetts, and many smart parents have been stocking up on school supplies and kid-friendly lunchbox snacks like peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, yogurt, crackers, cookies, and apple juice long in advance.
But wait. Wait a moment on the last one. There is currently a major recall on apple juice available at Walmart. You may want to wait to pack lunch boxes and do some research to make sure what you have purchased for your child is SAFE.
The public safety authorities at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have informed us that a Walmart brand of apple juice is being recalled due to high levels of arsenic.
Back in June 2023, the FDA set guidelines allowing no more than 10 parts per billion of inorganic arsenic in apple juice. The Great Value brand sold at Walmart contains more than 13 parts per billion. Hence the recall.
The Great Value apple juice was delivered to Walmart stores in 26 states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode IslandAnd Vermont.
Arsenic poisoning can be very serious. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may occur within 30 minutes of ingestion. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Specifically, the recalled item is six-packs of Great Value 100% apple juice in 8-oz. plastic bottles with a best-before date of “12/28/24.” The six-packs also have the UPC code 0-78742-29655-5.
Consumers who have purchased this product should immediately discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. For more information, visit the FDA website by clicking here.
