Great Value apple juice bottles sold by Walmart have been recalled by the manufacturer in 25 states.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the affected products were not distributed in Oklahoma.

The FDA reported that above-allowable levels of inorganic arsenic were found in Great Value’s 8-ounce bottles of apple juice, sold in six-packs. Manufacturer Refresco Beverages US Inc. initiated the voluntary recall.

Contaminated products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects,” according to the FDA’s classification. Serious health effects are considered unlikely.

According to the FDA, arsenic can enter the food supply in several ways. It can be ingested by plants and animals during their natural life cycle or it can contaminate the manufacturing process. For inorganic arsenic, contaminated drinking water is the most common source of high concentrations.

Exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause adverse neurological effects in children, and in adults, long-term exposure can lead to skin diseases, certain cancers and cardiovascular disease.
