Candy sold at Walmart, Target and other retailers is being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Palmer Candy Company of Iowa had already issued a recall of its white-coated products on May 6. Just last week, on August 6, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) upgraded the recall to a Class I problem. This means that the product has a reasonable probability of causing serious health problems or even death.

Almost 30 different products are affected.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, and production of the products has been suspended during the FDA investigation.

Which Palmer Candy products are being recalled?

All white-coated candy is being recalled, the FDA says, including caramel pretzels, patriotic snack mixes and zebra fudge cookies. The full list of recalled items includes:

It is important to note that in addition to Palmer Candy, these products are also sold under the brand names Sweet Smiles, Snackin’ With The Crew, Casey’s, Sconza Chocolates, Sunny Select, Urge! and Kwik Trip Inc.

Additionally, both Target and Walmart sell Palmer Candy products under their respective brand names: “Favorite Day Bakery” at Target and “Freshness Guaranteed” at Walmart.

Where were the recalled Palmer Candy products distributed?

The FDA says the products were distributed to wholesalers in 17 states: Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Although this list does not include any states in New England, the recall still poses a local threat because the contaminated products were also distributed nationwide to Dollar General, HyVee, Target and Walmart. That means if you recently purchased white-coated candy under any of the above brand names at Dollar General, Target or Walmart, you should return the items to the store.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of salmonella poisoning include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dehydration

These symptoms can appear between six hours and six weeks after infection, and the illness usually lasts four to seven days. It is recommended that you call your doctor if you have a fever above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, bloody stools, or persistent diarrhea and vomiting that makes it impossible to keep fluids down.

The CDC also points out that salmonella can cause more severe illness in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
