Walmart’s closed health centers will soon offer new services for seniors

A healthcare company is stepping in and reopening about half of the recently closed health centers in Walmart stores.

Humana’s CenterWell and Conviva will operate the new primary care centers focused on seniors. The locations will open in 23 Walmart Supercenters in Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas. Each center will be located next to a Walmart in space formerly occupied by Walmart Health.

Walmart Health announced that all 51 centers would close in April due to lack of profits, although the retail giant continues to operate pharmacies and optical centers. According to USA TodayWalmart used to have 23 health centers in Florida alone.

“Our priority will be to ensure that the people and communities affected are treated with the utmost respect, compassion and support throughout this transition,” Walmart officials said in the spring. “We are deeply grateful to these associates and providers for their caring service to the patients in our communities and the patients who have entrusted us with their care.”

The new CenterWell health centers will open in these southern metropolitan regions by June 2025:

“We are excited about the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner like Walmart and provide seniors in these four states with greater access to our integrated care approach,” said Dr. Sanjay Shetty, president of CenterWell, in a press release. “CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with high-quality healthcare that is accessible, comprehensive and, most importantly, personalized.”

CenterWell and Conviva emphasize providing more one-on-one time with doctors and other health care providers and coordinate care with a team of nurse practitioners, behavioral health professionals and pharmacists. For more information, visit centerwellprimarycare.com and convivacarecenters.com.
