Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers was understandably proud of his players’ performance: “You could see from the start that the players were absolutely sensational. When we increased the pressure, we were a really, really difficult opponent.”

“Mentality, hunger, desire for more goals, desire for the ball, everyone worked until the end and we could have scored more than five goals.”

“Expectations were high before the game, but for us it was just about not complicating the game.

“When we increased the pressure in the second half, it was really, really difficult to play against us.

“That was the start we wanted. I don’t think we could have asked for a better start, apart from a clean sheet, which unfortunately we didn’t keep.

“Our next three games are tough but exciting, we’ve made a fantastic start.”

He said of the two consecutive victories in the Champions League: “It is a small step, but an important step that we have taken.”

On Celtic’s recent difficulties in the competition, Rodgers added: “I want to change that mood and feeling. We have been working on it since the beginning of preseason so that we can have that belief.”

“That’s the level, just don’t think about it too much.

“The hype about the Champions League is incredible, but we are playing against a team that defends in a 4-4-2 system and that we will play against here in the league. OK, it’s different levels, but it’s still the same idea.”
