Watch live on TV as anchors react to the LA earthquake

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake north of Malibu struck Southern California on Thursday, shocking anchors of the morning’s live newscasts.

The earthquake struck at about 7:28 a.m. and was felt throughout Thousand Oaks, Calabasas and the Los Angeles area. The epicenter was closest to the Malibu Fault. Among the anchors who felt the quake mid-program were ABC7’s Marc Cota-Robles and The attachmentBy James Jones.

Cota-Robles had just started a segment about cinnamon this pumpkin spice season when the quake struck mid-sentence. “Oh, we have an earthquake,” he said. “That’s right. It’s shaking pretty good.” As the studio shook, a composed Cota-Robles guessed it was a magnitude 3 or 4 quake.

Jones, on the other hand, was completely focused on the task at hand this morning. The former NFL athlete was discussing quarterback Baker Mayfield with Emmanuel Acho, LeSean McCoy and Chase Daniel when the studio began to shake violently. He was undeterred and continued the segment until his colleague interrupted him.

“Hold on, James!” McCoy shouted. “It’s an earthquake! Speaking of Baker Mayfield, I almost lost my life!”

When Daniel shared the footage on X, he noted that it was the first earthquake he had ever experienced.

Meanwhile, the morning news team from Fox 11 Los Angeles also reported live from the quake. Amanda Salas, Melvin Robert and Jenn Lahmers calmly reported their observations of the turbulent morning. “This is an earthquake that we just experienced,” said Robert. “It’s still ongoing.”

The earthquake struck as three major wildfires raged across Southern California, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes, and at the end of a record-breaking heat wave for the region, which brought highs of 40 degrees Celsius in downtown Los Angeles and 49 degrees Celsius in Palm Springs.
