A Harris campaign spokesman issued a statement on Saturday saying that Tim Walz had already “made a mistake” in 2018 when he said (according to some media outlets), “We can ensure that the weapons of war that I carried in war will only be carried in war.”
But this quote is himself incorrectly transcribed from the original. Words are invented that are not there and the meaning is grammatically distorted.
Here are the words he actually said, taken from the original video:
We can ensure that the weapons of war I carried are only available in war.
If you mangle the last “is” and change it to “are” (like the New York Post, CNN, The Hill, ABCNews and other media outlets have done this) that twists the meaning to make it sound as if the “at war” fits with the “I wore” of the preceding phrase.
But that is not what Walz actually said. His singular grammar of the verb “is” clearly connects “in war” with the following Sentence (“in the war Is the only place where these weapons are located”). The change to “are” leads to the nonsensical sentence construction “these weapons … are the only place” (???).
Why do we in the United States, including the mainstream media, fail to get grammar right?
Here is the original video that was played at the point “war is the only place”. You can hear for yourself how the transcription of the perfectly understandable speech of the admittedly fast-talking Walz was garbled. How he even put the desired accents on the sentence “in War is that only Location Where this Weapons are.” And so the New York Post (et al.) story “Tim Walz falsely claimed…” is nothing more than another strange slander:
