Weather-related delay of Chiefs game against Ravens after thunderstorm in Kansas City

Weather-related delay of Chiefs game against Ravens after thunderstorm in Kansas City

The start of the 2024 NFL season is not going according to plan in Kansas City, as the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens face a delayed kickoff due to thunderstorms in the region.

An announcement was made on the big screen at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, urging fans to head to the bleachers to avoid the impending rain.

“Please note that due to weather conditions, all event/game activities will be suspended. GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium asks all guests to remain indoors and out of the weather and follow the instructions of stadium staff,” the announcement said.

“GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium apologizes for the inconvenience and will let you know when it is safe to return to your seat. Thank you.”

NBC’s broadcast of the game showed the current state of GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, where rain was falling steadily and fans were sheltering under awnings or braving the storm by standing in the rain and waving towels.

Whatever the case, the rain shouldn’t last too long, as kickoff is expected to be at 8:40 p.m. ET, according to the NBC broadcast.

The Chiefs also poked fun at an earlier tweet from the GEHA Field account at Arrowhead Stadium, which showed a picture of the field and the caption, “The calm before the storm.”

“We didn’t mean that literally…” the Chiefs replied as it started to rain.

When the rain subsides, fans will be allowed to return to their seats and watch the Chiefs and Ravens open the 2024 NFL season with a rematch of the AFC Championship Game that took place earlier this year.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs took the win on the road against the No. 1 seed Ravens, led by quarterback Lamar Jackson. The 17-10 victory for Kansas City allowed them to defend their Super Bowl title in Las Vegas against the San Francisco 49ers.

But the Ravens come to town with a new lineup on offense, particularly in the backfield, where veteran, hard-hitting running back Derrick Henry joins a group that also includes rising star receiver Zay Flowers and Jackson’s reliable tight end Mark Andrews.

The Ravens’ defense is also a solid unit that can take on any offense, even when led by Mahomes and managed by head coach Andy Reid.

The Chiefs were the home team last year when they opened the NFL season against the Detroit Lions, although things didn’t go well for Kansas City, losing 21-20 on their home turf in a game in which Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was unable to play due to injury.

But Kelce will be on the field for that game, and fans like his girlfriend Taylor Swift will be able to watch him face the Ravens once the rain lets up.
