Gorman Thomas on the Brewers’ managerial change during the 1982 season
Gorman Thomas and producer Kelly Kahl, both involved in the documentary “Just a Bit Outside” about the 1982 Brewers, remember a managerial change in the middle of the season.
The smell of bratwurst and beer will fill the parking lots this week during tailgate parties before Milwaukee Brewers games at American Family Field.
But the champagne is probably already on ice for a bigger celebration in the home team’s clubhouse (and possibly the visitors’ clubhouse as well).
With the magic number 3, the Brewers will almost certainly secure the NL Central Division and a spot in the playoffs at home this week.

It could happen as soon as Tuesday, although the Philadelphia Phillies might make it a little harder to get the celebrations going so quickly, as they are the only team in baseball with 90 wins. The Phillies beat the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park in early June. Milwaukee scored just two runs in the three-game series.
However, the Brewers have won seven of their last eight games against teams currently eligible for the postseason (Los Angeles Dodgers 2, Cleveland 3, Arizona 2). They have played seven games this week against the Phillies and the Diamondbacks.
And to spread even more October feeling in the next few days, the Phillies could win the division in Milwaukee with another sweep against the home team and two losses against the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets.
