What happened to the home advantage?

What happened to the home advantage?

The Red Sox have a successful record (67-60) because they have been strong on the road this season (38-27).

At home, things are different. With Friday night’s 12-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Red Sox dropped to 29-33 at Fenway Park. They have played 65 away games and 62 home games, hitting .259/.327/.430 in Boston compared to .262/.328/.449 on the road.

Fenway is a paradise for doubles, so their 140 doubles at home compared to 116 on the road is no surprise. However, they obviously waste a lot of those chances when a runner is in scoring position; they have scored 50 more times on the road than at home (290).

America’s oldest and “most beloved ballpark” is supposed to be the ultimate home-field advantage. Players, both Red Sox and visitors, have been saying it for years: The history and the electrifying energy of the crowd are what make Fenway special. Yet in 2023, the Red Sox were exactly 39-42 (.481) home and away.

So what’s going on? Manager Alex Cora is also at a loss.

“We know what we have to do to make it (to the postseason),” he said Friday. “We just have to be consistent in a few things, especially here. We have to play better at home.”

“And it’s a good time to play good baseball at home,” the Sox captain continued. “Because we know it’s going to be fun when we have important games in this arena in September. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be different for other teams. The teams we play in October are feeling it, but we’ve got to get it done. And in September, things are going to get really bad here. It’s going to be fun to be there, you know, but we’ve got to do our job. We’ve got to bridge the gap between here and September 1st.”
