Labor Day is on Monday, September 2. The holiday marks the unofficial end of summer 2024.
As students head back to school, many Americans are enjoying one last long weekend to host a summer barbecue or take a trip to the beach.
The first Monday in September commemorates the American labor movement and the contribution workers have made to the U.S. economy.
However, that doesn’t mean Americans no longer have errands to run, whether it’s a trip to the bank or a quick pick-up of an ingredient at the supermarket.
Find out what’s open and closed on Labor Day 2024.
If you need to shop quickly, you’re probably in luck. Most Kroger stores – including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer and Food 4 Less – are open during regular business hours.
Major retailers such as Walmart (WMT) and Target will resume operations as usual.
Most CVS (CVS) pharmacies will be open, but some local stores may have reduced hours. Walgreens stores will have their normal hours on Labor Day, but most pharmacies will be closed, with the exception of 24-hour locations and select pharmacies.
In particular, the wholesale retailer Costco (COST) will be closed.
You will not be able to send mail with the United States Postal Service on Monday because the carrier will be closed. All UPS services except Express Critical will also be closed, and only a few locations will be open. Only FedEx Custom Critical, the premium service for special shipments, will be operating, and FedEx Office service will be available with modified hours.
Labor Day is one of eleven federal bank holidays, so banks are closed. However, ATMs and online banking services are available.
Things will also look bleak on the US stock market. There will be no trading on the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange.
Federal offices and government buildings will be closed on Monday, including the DMV and local libraries. State and local courts will also be closed.
