Warning, spoilers for season 4.

Surprise, surprise! Emily is back. Or at least she will be soon when season 5 of “Emily in Paris” hits Netflix.

Netflix announced on Monday that its escapist romantic comedy “Emily in Paris” is returning for a fifth season.

“There’s no place like Rome!” says Lily Collins, who plays Emily, in the announcement video.

Series creator Darren Star told Netflix’s Tudum that the creators are “thrilled by the incredible response” to Season 4 and “are excited to return for a fifth season to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!”

Season 4 of the series ended with Emily temporarily moving to Rome to open an office for Agence Grateau and spend time with her attractive new boyfriend Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini).

Is Emily moving to Rome?

But does this mean Emily is moving to Rome permanently? The short answer is no.

“Emily will be present in Rome,” Star told Tudum. “That doesn’t mean she won’t be in Paris, but she will be present in Rome.”

The series creator added that the decision to move Emily to Italy was a move to “get ahead of the audience and take them to unexpected places” and prove “that the series has the potential to have a bigger impact.”

Previously, in a post-season interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Star said that the series would spend some time in Rome but would not leave Paris permanently.

“We’re going to spend some time in Rome. But she hasn’t changed her Instagram name to Emily in Rome,” Star had said. “…They can be in more than one city, and Emily can spend time in Rome. She can also spend time in Paris. She’s not going to leave Paris.”

Regarding Emily’s hot new boyfriend, Star said that Season 5 will explore Emily’s relationship with Marcello Muratori.

“I feel like there’s a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection between them. A lot of that will continue into the next season,” Star said.

Star had previously told THR that he intended to use Marcello as a fresh start for the American in Paris.

“I wanted to introduce a new love for Emily that feels like a fresh start after all the drama with Gabriel,” Star told the media company. “Marcello comes into Emily’s life in an unexpected way and opens the door to so many possibilities for Emily: new country, new culture, new adventure.”

Collins told Tudum she was looking forward to seeing what happens between Emily and Marcello.

“Marcello is a whole different adventure that we want for Emily because ultimately we want Emily to have a better work-life balance,” Collins told Tudum. “We want Emily to be able to smile unconditionally. We want her to go beyond her vacation mode. And he comes at just the right time.”

As for Gabriel, we’ll have to wait and find out, and Collins says he will have to “deal with the repercussions of his election.”

With the official announcement of a new season of Emily in Paris, here’s everything we know so far about Emily in Paris season 5, including the cast and release date.

Will there be a 5th season of “Emily in Paris”?

Yes. Netflix announced on Monday that “Emily in Paris” has officially been renewed for season 5.

While Netflix had previously kept quiet about whether the series would return for a new season, with a spokesperson for the streaming platform saying last week when asked by USA TODAY that there was no news to announce, the likelihood of a Season 5 was high. An extra role in the show’s fifth season was up for auction as part of the amfAR gala during the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Variety had reported, with hosts Winnie Harlow and Paris Jackson saying filming on Season 5 is planned for mid-2025. The extra role, courtesy of Star, reportedly sold for around $277,000 (€250,000).

The winner of the auction “will have the opportunity to spend a day on set in Paris during filming, contingent on the recording of Season 5,” the bid said.
