When is the time change?

For years, lawmakers in several states have been pushing to keep daylight saving time year-round. And while there have been rumors of year-round daylight saving time in Florida for years, we’ll be switching to daylight saving time in 2024 anyway.

But the autumn equinox, or “first day of fall,” occurs before we set our clocks to “change.” And even though the clocks will soon change and the leaves will soon be falling in some places, it will still feel like summer in Florida well into fall.

Here’s when the official “first day of fall” is, when the clocks change this fall, and when cooler temperatures are expected in Florida.

When is the first day of autumn?

There are two equinoxes and two solstices each year. Equinoxes occur in the fall and spring and are called the autumnal and vernal equinoxes. They mark the first official day of spring and the first official day of fall each year.

The summer solstice this year was on Thursday, June 20th at 4:51 p.m. EDT. And the fall equinox is right around the corner, according to The Farmers’ Almanac, on Sunday, September 22nd at 8:44 a.m. EDT.

The meteorological end of summer was on Labor Day.

Has Florida abolished daylight saving time?

Florida lawmakers introduced a bill in 2021 that would extend daylight saving time from eight months a year to year-round.

The Sunshine Protection Act, a proposed federal bill, has not received approval from the U.S. House of Representatives or the President, but has been proposed in several congressional sessions over the past few years and is expected to pass the U.S. Senate in 2023.

Florida will also fall behind this year.

When is summer time 2024? When does the time change take place?

Daylight saving time for the year 2024 began on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. EST (spring eve) and ends or will be reset to 2 a.m. EST on Sunday, November 2.

What month does it get cooler in Florida?

According to the National Weather Service’s September 2023 report, temperatures in Florida are typically cooler for a day or two in the fall, but in the winter, starting in November, Florida typically begins to feel noticeably and consistently cooler.

This means that while other states enjoy the temperate weather, fresh air, and changing leaves in fall, Florida residents must wait until the winter months to experience real relief from the heat.

“The first bout of cooler, drier air is usually short-lived, lasting only a day or two. The real cooling usually doesn’t happen until November,” the NWS website says.

According to the Farmers’ Almanac’s 60-day weather forecast for Florida, temperatures in Florida will still be around 80 degrees in September, as usual.

The average temperature expected for September in Florida this year will be around 27.6 degrees (which is one degree below average), and about 241 mm of rain is expected for the entire month (which is about 5 cm more than average).
