The stars of “Baby Reindeer,” “The Bear” and “The Crown” are among those preparing for the Emmys, the television industry’s most prestigious awards ceremony.
Other shows competing for the top prizes in Los Angeles include “Ripley,” “Shogun,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Slow Horses,” “3 Body Problem” and “Only Murders in the Building.”
The big names in the running for the acting awards include Idris Elba, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr.
Sunday’s event comes just eight months after the last Emmy Awards, which was postponed from its usual September date to January because of the Hollywood strikes.
Who hosts the Emmys?
This year’s host is a Canadian father-son duo Eugene Levy And Daniel Levy.
The couple is best known for starring together in Schitt’s Creek and co-creating the sitcom that hit during the first Covid lockdown and dominated the 2020 Emmy Awards.
Before that, father Eugene, 77, had a long and successful career in film and television, with roles in “American Pie” and “For Your Consideration,” while Dan, 41, appeared in “Sex Education,” “Modern Family” and the Netflix film “Good Grief.”
“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a real quarantine tent, the prospect of hosting in a real theater this year was incentive enough,” the pair said in a statement. “We’re excited to toast this extraordinary season of television.”
Elsewhere, Selena Gomez, Billy Crystal, Viola Davis, Jimmy Kimmel, Christine Baranski, Lily Gladstone, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph And Steve Martin will all present individual awards.
It looks like a kind of West Wing reunion is also coming, because Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Jimmy Smits, Dulé Hill And Janel Moloney are all listed in the category moderators list.
A Happy Days reunion is also likely, with Ron Howard And Henry Winkler Both will perform to mark the show’s 50th anniversary.
Which TV shows are nominated?
The Emmys divide their nominations into three categories – Comedy, Drama And limited series.
Traditionally, the most prestigious category of the evening is “Best Drama Series” – and often the same shows win year after year.
In seven of the last nine years, either “Succession” or “Game of Thrones” won the Emmy. Now that both films have ended, the field is clear for a potential newcomer to take their place.
The nominees for this year’s best drama are 3 Body Problem, The Morning Show, Fallout, Shogun, The Gilded Age, Slow Horses And Mr and Mrs Smithalongside another previous winner, The crown.
The most interesting category this year is the best limited series, where Baby reindeer leads the field.
The account of Scottish comedian Richard Gadd, who was stalked by a woman for several years and sexually abused by a male television star, was the most talked about show this year.
But the real woman who allegedly inspired the character of the stalker sues Netflix for defamation, negligence and invasion of privacy. Could this take some of the shine off the show and cost them votes at the Emmys?
Baby Reindeer’s competitors for best limited series are Fargo, chemistry class, Ripley And True Detective: Nightland.
Nominees in the comedy categories include Hacks, Reservation Dogs, Abbott Elementary, Leave It, Larry!, Palm Royale, What We Do in the Shadows And Only murders in the building.
However, the comedy categories are likely to be dominated by The bearwhich is controversial in itself, as many people believe that the show is not a comedy and should not compete there.
Far be it from us to speculate as to why this show was submitted as a comedy – but some people may wonder if it is because it is easier to win in this category as the competition is less serious than in a drama.
However, the third season of The Bear was not as critically acclaimed or loved by fans as the first two, so there is no guarantee that it will achieve as much success as the previous seasons.
