Where is Union Park in Chicago? What to know about the rallying point for DNC protests – NBC Chicago

Several protests are expected in Chicago later this week as delegates arrive in the city for the Democratic National Convention.

All six approved protests, scheduled Monday through Thursday, will begin at one central point: Union Park.

Union Park is located at 1501 W. Randolph St. on the Near West Side, about 0.4 miles from the main convention venue, the United Center. Bordered by Ashland Avenue, Washington Boulevard, and Lake and Randolph Streets, the park covers 13.77 acres and features several buildings, including a gymnasium, and various outdoor facilities, according to the Chicago Park District website.

On Friday, a coalition that organizes protests reached a last-minute agreement with city officials, meeting many of the group’s demands by providing an on-site stage and sound system. The agreement includes a stage, sound system and portable toilets in Union Park. Tents, which the city previously said could be used to conceal protesters’ activities, are not included.

Protesters said the deal was made possible by a direct appeal to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who served as a union official before entering politics.

While three protests had already taken place in the park by Monday afternoon, more are planned in the coming days.
