The second week of NFL play comes to a close with a Monday Night Football matchup between two NFC teams hoping to win their division.
The Philadelphia Eagles host the Atlanta Falcons in a matchup that will have major implications for the teams that are ahead in both the NFC East and NFC South races at the start of the season.
The Eagles are coming off a 34-29 win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFL’s first Brazil game in Week 1. Philadelphia’s offense was buzzing in that game, with wide receiver AJ Brown rushing for 119 yards and a touchdown on five catches, while running back Saquon Barkley made his Eagles debut with 134 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns on 26 touches.
Philadelphia’s defense wasn’t quite as strong on the slippery field in Sao Paolo, but Vic Fangio’s unit should fare much better at home against an Atlanta offense that struggled in Week 1.

The Falcons scored just 10 points in their opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their defense limited the Steelers to 18 points, but Kirk Cousins didn’t quite have the impact many Atlanta fans hoped for in his debut.
Cousins completed 16 of 26 passes for 158 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a shaky game. It looked like he was still recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered last season, and it appears the 36-year-old’s mobility will be a question mark as the 2024 season begins.

Who’s playing on Monday Night Football tonight?
The Falcons (0-1) travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles (1-0) in the second edition of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”
The Eagles should have the advantage in this matchup. They have a strong pass rush, and the Falcons struggled to contain TJ Watt and the Steelers defense, which hit Cousins seven times. Philadelphia may have more vulnerabilities in its secondary — where it relies on a combination of veterans in the late fall of their careers and recent draft picks — that Atlanta can exploit, but Cousins isn’t guaranteed to have the time needed to get the ball far.
The Falcons will have a tough time defending the Eagles, too. Atlanta has just allowed 127 rushing yards to Justin Fields and Najee Harris, and Philadelphia’s offensive line is in much better shape than Pittsburgh’s. Add to that the fact that Jalen Hurts is a more consistent shooter with better weapons than Fields, and it’s fair to wonder if the Eagles could have another 30-point lead against the Falcons.

However, the Falcons will be keen to avoid an 0-2 start, especially as they face the Chiefs in Week 3. If Atlanta comes out energized and Philadelphia is sluggish after the long trip to and from Brazil, the Falcons could find a way to beat the Eagles and keep up in the wide-open NFC South.
Therefore, NFL fans can look forward to an exciting battle at the end of the second week of the 2024 NFL season.
