Taylor Fritz wants to win his first Grand Slam title and would be the first American to do so since Andy Roddick in 2003.
Before this year’s US Open, Fritz said Terms and Conditions, “At the end of the day, you can’t think about the worst case scenario. You can’t think about the bad things that could happen. You just have to go out and play. That’s something I’ve learned – I’ve had times in the past where I’ve been very nervous in Grand Slam weeks and it’s such an important week to perform, but then I’ve had some losses and that’s taught me to just go out and not worry so much. Even if you’re worried, So a lot. It’s hard to explain, but it has to be important to you and then at the same time not matter.”
In today’s final against Jannik Sinner, he will be cheered on by his players’ box, where his team, his girlfriend and his family will be sitting. Here is an overview of the who’s who:
His coach, Michael Russell
Russell and Fritz have been working together since 2021.
This US Open is Fritz’s first time making it to the semifinals and final of a Grand Slam, and Russell couldn’t be prouder. “He was so close to making the semifinals and to do it here at the US Open is fantastic,” Russell said this week. “He’s really excited and so is the team. Of course, there’s always a lot of talk about who will be the next American to win a Grand Slam…”
His girlfriend Morgan Riddle
“When Taylor and I started dating, I got to know the sport that I really, really knew nothing about,” Riddle said City and country. “I went to college in New York and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the US Open, which is ridiculous. I’ve never really been part of a fandom – this is the first fandom I’ve been a part of and I want other people to be able to experience that too.” Now she’s one of the biggest advocates when it comes to introducing new fans to tennis and is constantly supporting Taylor.
His mother, Kathy May Fritz
Taylor’s parents are both former tennis pros. “I always had this idea that it was cool to do what your parents did, so I played tennis. And I liked tennis, but to be honest, I had phases when I was younger where I hated it and didn’t want to play because I enjoyed other sports much more,” Taylor said. Haute Living“My parents never pressured me to play. I just tried everything until I got to an age where I had to decide and pick one.”
His mother, Kathy May, reached number 10 in the world rankings and won seven WTA titles during her career. She is also the great-granddaughter of David May, the founder of May Department Stores – now better known as Macy’s.
His father, Guy Fritz
Guy Fritz reached the highest ranking of his career at 301 and began training Taylor at a young age. “I did everything I could to make him a champion,” Guy said. “I can’t tell you everything I did from the minute he was born.”
His physiotherapist Wolfgang Oswald
Another member of Taylor’s team in his box is Wolfgang Oswald, his strength and conditioning coach. Wolfgang has worked with Taylor for years and recently gave an interview where he gave insight into his mentality.
“He’s quiet and reserved and, when he’s not on the court, very calm. His heart rate doesn’t even go up a beat a minute when we’re late for the flight. He’s so cool, calm and composed,” Wolfgang said of Taylor. “And then when you watch him in a match, he fights to the end with everything he has. But I think being calm most of the time helps your mental energy when you need to ramp it up. You can ramp it up. If you’re always on edge and then have to ramp it up even more for a match, it can be very mentally exhausting sometimes.”
His agent Matt Fawcett
Also in Taylor’s box is his agent Matt Fawcett (pictured above) during the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Lilly Russell
Lilly is the wife of Michael Russell and travels with her husband and the rest of Taylor’s team on the ATP tour. According to her Instagram, she is a former fitness competitor. In the front row of Fritz’s box, the same four people always sit next to each other, from left to right: Lily, Morgan, Wolfgang and Michael.
