Whoopi Goldberg doesn’t believe Beyoncé was overlooked at the CMA Awards

Whoopi Goldberg has tried to curb fans’ expectations about Beyoncé’s country music crossover, The view Presenter and Oscar winner said she did not feel that the CMA Awards had snubbed the former Destiny’s Child superstar when they awarded her the Cowboy Carter Album with zero nominations earlier this week.

“Many people are surprised – I don’t know why – that there was not a single nomination for the CMA Award. Well, that is the question: Are You surprised?” the 68-year-old said on Tuesday’s episode of the talk show, opening the discussion to her co-hosts after saying, “I don’t think she was snubbed, I think they just didn’t… it wasn’t for her.”

Legal expert Sunny Hostin said she expected Beyoncé to be nominated for two tracks from the well-received album, including a contemporary reinterpretation of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” which Parton herself gave her blessing – so much so that Parton actually performed. Cowboy Carter to introduce the song.

“I love Dolly Parton, so when the Queen of Country passed the baton a little bit for ‘Jolene,’ an incredible song on her album, and ‘Texas Hold ‘Em,’ two incredible country songs, I thought she would at least be nominated for those two,” said Hostin, 55. “But my mom always told me, ‘Find the audience that’s looking for you.’ That audience isn’t looking for her.”

Conservative panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out that the “audience” is on Beyoncé’s side, despite the “industry insiders” in the Country Music Association voting bloc. “The audience is on her side,” stressed the 35-year-old Griffin, referring to Cowboy Cardr’s success in the American music rankings. “The Country Billboard Diagrams don’t lie.”

Goldberg reminded Griffin that the audience is “not the voters” before co-host Sara Haines told her colleagues that she believes artists primarily “make music to be consumed, not for people to judge” and that award voting is “always a political endeavor.”

“She knows who she is,” the 46-year-old concluded. “The best revenge is success.”

After its release in March Cowboy Carter Hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, after the first single “Texas Hold ‘Em” reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. However, select country radio stations initially refused to play the song because Beyoncé’s artistic roots lie in other popular music genres.

Goldberg’s views on awards ceremonies have remained unchanged over the years, even as she has addressed claims that the Oscars have Barbie’s Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig in the categories “Best Actress” and “Best Director” earlier this year.

“There are no snubs. You have to keep that in mind: Not everyone gets an award, and it’s subjective. Films are subjective,” Goldberg said on The view in January. “The movies you love may not be loved by the people who vote.”

The view airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/PT on ABC.
