Why is this Tesla Cybertruck standing in line at the gas station?

Why is this Tesla Cybertruck standing in line at the gas station?

A Costco customer waiting online for gas noticed a car that probably shouldn’t be there. As much as people make fun of Tesla Cybertrucks online, it’s usually not about that one reason.

Unnamed TikToker @user676594012 posted his double-take encounter in a viral clip. His video garnered over 235,000 views on the popular social media platform.

“Why is brother standing in line at the gas station?!” reads a text overlay in the TikTok, showing the vehicle, which is easily recognizable due to its distinctive design features. Then the user zooms in, showing beyond a doubt that it is indeed a Tesla Cybertruck.

The Cybertruck is a pure electric vehicle, meaning it’s a fully electric vehicle that can’t be refueled at a gas station. An electric car can only generate electricity from gasoline if an electric car charger is connected to a gasoline generator.

Why is a Cybertruck waiting in line at the gas station?

Some viewers on TikTok thought there was a logical explanation for the Cybertruck owner’s visit to the gas station.

Several people speculated that the driver actually had a gas generator in the trunk of his car.

One user joked, “Needs gas for his generator to charge his car.” Another replied, “For the generator when the battery dies.”

Another viewer said: “How much do you want to bet he fills his generator?”

Others believe there are more practical reasons why the Cybertruck owner was in line.

One electric vehicle owner noted that he sometimes drives to the gas station just to have his windshield cleaned. “I have an electric vehicle and I go to the gas station to have my windshield cleaned. I’m not saying this person does that, but it’s possible,” he wrote.

Another thought they were having a can filled so they could use the gas for other things. “Maybe they’re just filling a gas can for things at home,” they said.

“I thought it was a lawnmower or something but guys come on,” wrote another.

And then this TikTok user wrote: “I guess you don’t think he needs gas for a lawn mower or something.”

The hatred of Cybertrucks continues

In any social media or forum post about Tesla’s latest model, you’re bound to find comments about its aesthetics. Even in response to the Costco gas station video, one user wrote, “Someone said they looked like something a little kid drew and now I can’t forget it.”

An X user also published this popular post where he wrote about an experience at a cafe with a Cybertruck. Someone drove their car to the cafe and left it parked outside. The X user was amused when customers kept saying how stupid it looked.

And then there was that viral Instagram post that showed a Cybertruck hater in the wild. He left a mean note insulting the owner’s supposed inability to have romantic relationships with women. What he didn’t count on was the fact that there were cameras mounted all around the vehicle. One of the cameras snapped a photo of the man leaving the note, leading to widespread ridicule.

Criticism goes beyond appearance

Much of the hate, however, has focused on the quality control issues surrounding the car. According to NBC News, there have been no fewer than four recalls for the Tesla Cybertruck through June 25, 2024.

Some of these recalls appear to pose greater potential safety risks than others. The automaker recently posted a recall for accelerator pads on its website. “Tesla has voluntarily issued a safety recall for model year 2024 Cybertruck vehicles to replace or redesign the accelerator pedal assembly to ensure sufficient retention force between the pad and the accelerator pedal to prevent pad disengagement,” the website states.

CNN also reported on another recall involving a piece of plastic trim on the “angled bed of the truck.” This piece is said to fly off while driving, which could spell bad news for drivers stuck behind the Cybertruck in traffic.

Additionally, the outlet wrote that the Cybertruck’s massive, single windshield wiper had to be recalled. Some motors that power those wipers can break because too much current would short them out. “Some of the motors were damaged during testing in a way that allowed too much current to flow through the motor, causing it to fail,” CNN reported.
