Why the Seahawks gave us hope after Sunday’s win (and why we’re still not so sure)

Why the Seahawks gave us hope after Sunday’s win (and why we’re still not so sure)

That was fun, wasn’t it?

After allowing two safeties and two turnovers in the first half, the Seahawks came out on top and found a way to win against the Broncos in their season opener on Sunday.

And that’s what we love about it.

The Seahawks were down 13-9 against Denver after a forgettable first half. The mistakes could have turned the game into quicksand.

Instead, the exact opposite was the case.

Seattle gave it their all in the second half. The mistakes stopped. Kenneth Walker III was able to free himself up for big runs, while Geno Smith found his receivers at will.

The answer, quite frankly, was everything.

“We just wanted a little fightback,” Mike Macdonald said jokingly of the first-half difficulties. “Yeah, we’ll get it all sorted in the first half. I’ll tell you what, the guys on the sideline with our team were ready. Nobody batted an eyelid. We knew what we had to do to win the game, stuck to the plan, made some adjustments and just kept playing. It’s a long game. These games go 60 minutes to the end.

“I’m proud of our guys, their effort, their attitude and their togetherness. I thought they played really, really hard, so I’m proud of the guys. There’s a lot of things we want to tackle next week to get ready for New England, and that’s what we’re going to do. Hopefully we make a big jump from Game 1 to Game 2.”

That’s what we talk about and what gives us hope. It’s so difficult to be at your best in Week 1. Some teams are. You could argue the Seahawks were at their best in the third quarter, too, but there are always a lot of variables with these things.

For the Hawks to turn things around in their first game of the season? That gives us hope for what could happen. That’s not to say we’re predicting a Super Bowl or bust season, but you have to love how the team is pulling together to make sure their new coach wins his first game. The chemistry between this team is already apparent.

Since you have no idea how the season will end, you have to take the best from the first game:

  • The entire team corrected its mistakes in the second half
  • There were crucial plays everywhere. Who could forget Tyler Lockett’s amazing catch that essentially ended the game?
  • The Seahawks scored 17 points in a row, reaffirmed their dominance and showed us what they can do
  • The defense was excellent and did not allow a touchdown until the final minutes of the game.

The title of this story is: “And why we are not so sure yet.”

I think this is important to clarify because it is only September and the first week. Anything can happen.

However, it seemed like the Denver Broncos were still struggling to find their way. Perhaps it will come, after all, this was rookie quarterback Bo Nix’s first game, but at times it felt like the Seahawks were lucky to be only just behind. If it had been a stronger team, the game might have gotten out of control early on.

So there is understanding for any fan who may be hesitant in view of the opponent’s problems and the many mistakes made by Seattle in the first half.

For now? Get the win. The Mike Macdonald era has started well and no one can change that. The Seahawks have proven they can bounce back quickly and there is no reason to believe that will continue.

It may only be one game, but this team embodies the tough nature of their head coach and was fun to watch. It will be exciting to see what happens as the season progresses.
