TUCSON, Arizona – Arizona wrapped up the Wildcat Classic on Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Southern Utah (25-21, 25-19, 25-20), its seventh sweep of the season. The Wildcats finished the non-conference season undefeated for the first time since 2009. Carlie Cisneros, Jaelyn HodgeAnd Avery Scoggins were named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team.
Carlie Cisneros led Arizona with 11 kills and 13 digs – her third double-double of the season – while the defense scored nine blocks and was led by Alayna Johnson with five blocks. Jordan Wilson recorded nine kills and Jaelyn Hodge had eight kills to help Arizona defeat Southern Utah.
The Cats won the first set 25-21. In a back-and-forth set, Hodge led with six kills and a .462 average. Johnson and Wilson each had three kills, helping the offense to a .359 batting average. Arizona’s defense held the Thunderbirds to a .214 batting average, and the Wildcats used a 3-0 run late in the set to take a 1-0 lead.
Arizona won the second set 25-19. The Cats spread their offense with seven players recording at least one kill. Cisneros and Wilson led the charge with four kills each and a .375 average. Arizona’s defense recorded 3.0 blocks and held SUU to a .062 hitting percentage, led by Johnson with three block assists. The Wildcats took an early lead in the set and the Thunderbirds were unable to catch up.
The Wildcats won the match 25-20 in the third set. Cisneros totaled four kills and achieved a .500 batting average, leading the offense. Three Wildcats – Wilson, Kiari RobeyAnd Amanda DeWitt — each had two kills. Arizona managed 5.0 blocks and held Southern Utah to .111. Robey led the defense with four blocks — one solo and four assists — and DeWitt had a season-high three block assists.
Arizona will open the Big 12 next week at Baylor and TCU. The Cats will face the Baylor Bears on Wednesday, September 25th at 5 p.m. MST before heading to TCU on Friday, September 27th.
