Wilt Chamberlain’s best moments: memories of a legend

Wilt Chamberlain would have turned 88 today.

The NBA Hall of Famer is one of the most famous players to ever grace the court. He holds over 70 NBA records. His fame also came at the college level, where he dominated at Kansas. Chamberlain was the first “unstoppable” player the sport had ever seen. He won four MVP awards and was named an All-Star 13 times.

Given his incredible career full of extraordinary moments, FOX Sports Research analyzed the best moments from his 14 seasons in the NBA.

Let’s take a look:

The five best moments in Wilt Chamberlain’s career

Score 100 points in a game

  • A record that may never be broken: Chamberlain scored 100 points in a 169-147 victory over the Knicks on March 2, 1962. In fact, he set five other records in that game and held up a picture with the number “100.” That same season, Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points per game – still the highest season average in NBA history. And he did that in just his third year in the league.

Seven games in a row with 50 points each

  • During the 1961-62 season, Chamberlain set another record that will likely never be broken. The third-year center managed an incredible seven consecutive 50-point games between December 16 and December 29, 1961. He scored 50 points 45 times that season, setting the record for the highest average points per game in a season, as mentioned above.

Wins the first championship

  • Chamberlain averaged over 30 points and 22 rebounds per game in his first seven seasons in the league, but he finally had a trophy to add to his resume – the NBA title with Philadelphia in 1966-67. That season, he won MVP honors for the second year in a row and was the league’s leading rebounder en route to defeating his former team in the Finals.

Gets 55 rebounds in one game

  • We’ve talked a lot about Chamberlain’s scoring ability, but his rebounding skills are arguably the best expression of his dominance. He led the league in that category 11 times in 14 seasons, and grabbed an incredible 55 rebounds on November 24, 1960, against the Celtics. Chamberlain accomplished this feat in just his second year in the league.

Win the title with the Lakers

  • After being a dominant force in San Francisco and Philadelphia, Chamberlain took his talents to Los Angeles in the 1968-69 season and won the title with them in the 1971-72 season. In his 13th NBA season, he led the league in field goal percentage and rebounds and was named Finals MVP. He was also celebrated for his outstanding performance despite playing while injured.
