Wind gusts at NYC airports reach over 52 miles per hour, in Westchester 53 miles per hour

The arrival of Tropical Depression Debby on Friday brought strong winds to southeastern New York State, including the Hudson Valley, New York City and eastern Long Island.

The Hudson Valley experienced some of the region’s strongest winds, resulting in tornado warnings, power outages and downed trees.

Read on to learn about the strongest wind gusts at airports and observation areas in southeastern New York State, as reported by the National Weather Service on Friday, August 9, 2024.

These numbers are collected from a variety of sources with varying equipment and exposure, including volunteer weather observers, and are considered unofficial.

Hudson Valley experienced the highest wind gusts on Friday

On the North Shore, the strongest wind gusts were reported in southeastern New York on Friday afternoon. Gusts of up to 53 mph were measured in Larchmont Harbor in Westchester at 1:48 p.m. Friday.

Elsewhere in Westchester, gusts of 48 mph were recorded at the Westchester County Airport in White Plains at 4:35 p.m. Friday. In Somers, gusts of 41 mph were reported at 3:25 p.m.

In Putnam, gusts of 41 mph were reported at 2:22 p.m. Friday.

Gusts of 40 miles per hour were reported at Orange County Airport in Montgomery at 2:44 p.m. Friday.

New York City airports and boroughs struggle with strong winds

At Fiorello LaGuardia Airport in Queens, gusts of up to 52 miles per hour were recorded Friday afternoon. Later in the day, JFK Airport reported wind gusts of 46 miles per hour at 4:24 p.m.

Elsewhere in the five boroughs, gusts of 49 mph were reported in the Kew Garden Hills neighborhood of Queens at 1:40 p.m. In the Bronx, Fordham reported gusts of 46 mph at 1:55 p.m. Brooklyn College reported gusts of 46 mph at 3:00 p.m.

At 12:55 p.m., gusts of 43 mph were reported in Midtown.

In the East: Long Island airports experience strong wind gusts

In Nassau County, wind gusts over 42 mph were reported in Bayville and Oyster Bay at 1:06 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., respectively. Kings Point reported the highest gusts in the county at 52 mph on Friday afternoon.

Further east in Suffolk, the airports appeared to have the windiest day. Farmingdale Airport reported gusts of 46 mph at 1:21 p.m. and Islip also reported winds of 46 mph, but not until later in the day at 3:23 p.m. Shirley Airport reported a gust of 43 mph at 3:50 p.m.

Elsewhere on the island, gusts of 45 mph were recorded in Stony Brook at 3:15 p.m., 43 mph in Eatons Neck at 4:46 p.m. and 42 mph in Sinai Harbor at 6:07 p.m.
