Wings Over Muskegon Air Show 2025 canceled due to airport reconstruction

Wings Over Muskegon Air Show 2025 canceled due to airport reconstruction

If you enjoyed the return of Wings Over Muskegon, be sure to join us this weekend as it is your last chance until 2026.

Fans of the popular air show will be disappointed to learn that the event will not take place in 2025. This difficult decision comes as the Muskegon County Airport prepares for a major FAA-sponsored construction project set to begin in spring 2025.

The $20 million project, which will take six months to complete, will involve the complete dismantling and reconstruction of Taxiway Alpha, one of the airport’s oldest and most important infrastructure elements. Originally built in the 1960s, Taxiway Alpha will undergo a major overhaul, including the installation of new lighting, navigation aids and underground utilities. The taxiway will also be relocated further southeast, away from the energy-intensive areas in the middle of Runway 6/24.

Construction will be conducted in phases throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2025 and will have a significant impact on ground traffic at the airport. While routine scheduled airline service and general aviation operations are expected to continue as usual, the complexity and scope of the project make it impossible to host an air show during this time. The runway is critical to the smooth running of the Wings Over Muskegon event, especially when areas associated with the show are closed.

Given these challenges, airport staff, working closely with the Michigan Flight Museum and other key stakeholders, have decided to postpone next year’s air show. But there is good news: Plans are already in place for the Wings Over Muskegon Air Show to return in 2026 once construction is complete.

For anyone who is dying to see this year’s Wings Over Muskegon, the event begins tomorrow, August 9th, at 5 p.m. with a twilight show featuring live music and a full lineup of aerialists. The show continues all weekend, with gates opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. With ideal weather conditions forecast, it promises to be a spectacular event.
