Winners and losers: 49ers beat Jets 32-19 on Monday Night Football – NBC Bay Area

The first week ended with Vintage 49ers Football on Monday night.

San Francisco dominated the New York Jets 32-19 and, without reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, prevented the return of Aaron Rodgers, who tore his Achilles tendon last season.

Jordan Mason replaced McCaffrey as the starting running back and was able to completely compensate for the loss of the star. The Jets had an elite defense last season but had no answer because Brock Purdy didn’t have to do much.

The scoreboard read 32-13 until the Jets scored another touchdown with 25 seconds left, but missed the two-point conversion, their second failed attempt of the night.

Let’s further analyze the game with five winners and losers:

WINNER: Jordan Mason, 49ers

One cut, one hit, it didn’t matter. However Mason ran, he got what he wanted. The 25-year-old, who went undrafted in 2022, recorded 28 carries for 147 yards and one touchdown, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt and a longest of 24 yards. He also had a 17-yard touchdown that was called back.

The 49ers can feel more comfortable with McCaffrey sitting on the bench a little longer, especially with the Minnesota Vikings’ turf field next up. Deebo Samuel also received eight carries, rushing for 23 yards and scoring a touchdown a few yards from the goal.

LOSERS: Aaron Rodgers, Jets

Rodgers showed flashes of his past brilliance, but the current 49ers defense finally shut down after a shaky start. The 40-year-old completed 13 of 21 passes for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked just once.

New York’s running game didn’t offer much help either. Breece Hall struggled until the final drive when substitutes were brought in. Hall also fumbled early when Fred Warner knocked the ball out.

Still, this was far from the debut Rodgers and the Jets had hoped for, but it’s a long season and the 49ers are contenders for a reason.

WINNER: Jake Moody, 49ers

San Francisco could have – and should have – decided the game much earlier. But second-year kicker Moody started the season perfectly after a rocky rookie season.

Moody sank all six field goal attempts – including a doink – and made two of two extra points. His longest attempt of the day was 53 yards. He essentially scored more points (20 total) than the Jets had before garbage time.

LOSER: Robert Saleh, Jets

Saleh made a name for himself as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator thanks to smart decisions and adjustments, as well as incredible energy on the sideline. This was his first game against the 49ers after becoming New York’s head coach, but he had a lot more to do.

Saleh should still have playing time when Rodgers is healthy, but if the Jets don’t look like serious contenders over the next three to four weeks, a dialogue may be necessary.

WINNER: Nick Sorensen, 49ers

Mason was the 49ers’ star defensive offensive lineman and the new coordinator. Sorensen, who joined the team two seasons ago and served as an assistant, made his debut as defensive coordinator, replacing Steve Wilks, last season’s polarizing veteran coach.

Aside from Warner’s forced fumble and when Rodgers and Garrett Wilson got going, Sorensen’s unit got off to a rocky start, but the adjustments quickly became apparent on the field when the Jets faltered.

Replacing Dre Greenlaw’s performance would be a critical mistake, but Sorensen was optimistic about his plays, which should make for interesting watching given the tight schedule for the rest of the game.
