Local technicians and hobbyists will help residents reuse and recycle when the annual “Fix It! Don’t Pitch It” workshop returns to the Winter Park Events Center on Saturday, September 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event, hosted by the City of Winter Park and the Winter Park Library, supports the city’s Sustainability Action Plan by repairing worn or slightly damaged items that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
Fix It! Don’t Pitch It is not only a way for the community to save money, but also to meet and work with fellow citizens who donate their time and skills to share tips on repairing and maintaining household items. What began in 2017 with eight assistants now includes 12 to 15 volunteers who help fix everything from textiles to home computers. “We recruit from our large corps of library and city volunteers,” Jody Lazar, Winter Park Library’s director of community engagement, told the32789. “We also use VolunteerMatch and advertise the opportunities on social media and via email.”
The items that can be repaired include glasses, bicycles, electronics, small appliances, clothing and other textiles. Anyone who would like to volunteer for the workshop can fill out an application here.
