The Wisconsin Badgers conclude their non-conference schedule today with one of the biggest games in college football.

The 2-0 Badgers will host 18-time national champion Alabama in a Big Ten-SEC showdown at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.

It’s the first game in a home-and-away series between the Badgers and Crimson Tide, with the rematch next year in Alabama. Wisconsin is coming off a 27-13 win over South Dakota, a team in the Football Championship Subdivision. Now the Badgers will move up a weight class and then some when fourth-ranked Alabama and Heisman Trophy candidate Jalen Milroe comes to town.

The perennial favorites look different this season. For the first time in 18 years, Nick Saban is not on the sidelines as head coach. Saban, who won six national titles with Alabama, resigned after last season, ending his legendary career. Kalen DeBoer, who led Washington to the College Football Playoffs in 2023, has taken over in Tuscaloosa.

DeBoer has gotten the Tide going, although it’s still a work in progress. After a 63-0 win in Week 1, Alabama struggled against South Florida for three quarters before pulling away with a 42-16 victory last week.

After narrow wins in tougher-than-expected games over the first two weeks, Luke Fickell’s Badgers are huge underdogs against Alabama. Can Wisconsin pull off the upset?

It sounds like star offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, who has some Big Ten experience, will be available for Alabama today. Proctor initially committed to Iowa, but then transferred to Alabama, then returned to Alabama again.

He is expected to be one of the top picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Badgers are celebrating Ron Dayne’s historic 1999 season today on their 25th anniversary, and Dayne is on hand to join in the festivities. Dayne, of course, set the NCAA rushing record that year, led his team to the Rose Bowl and won the Heisman Trophy.

UW unveiled a banner above his name on the facade of Camp Randall that reads “7,125,” indicating his career yardage. Game notes today indicate he is the all-time leading runner in NCAA history. But that distinction is complicated. The NCAA did not count bowl game statistics into season and career numbers until 2002 and refused to award those statistics to players retroactively. Thus, San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey officially holds the record, but he was awarded bowl game yards that Dayne is not allowed to count (and Pumphrey Despite it narrowly displaces Dayne from the top spot).

Wisconsin isn’t used to being the underdog at home, but Alabama’s 16.5-point edge in the betting odds is unlike anything we’ve seen in Madison since 1991, back before the program completed its renaissance under Barry Alvarez.

Wisconsin was a 17.5-point underdog against Iowa on Oct. 12, 1991; that was the last time UW was such a big underdog at Camp Randall.

A win over No. 4 Alabama would be the highest-ranked regular-season victory over an SEC team for ANY Big Ten program. Wisconsin’s win over No. 5 LSU at Lambeau Field in 2016 is the best win a Big Ten program has ever had against a top-4 SEC team. Ohio State beat No. 7 LSU in 1988.

As expected, scouts are out in force to watch Alabama, including representatives from the Green Bay Packers. Camp Randall Stadium is packed, and 14 NFL teams are on the list of participants.

Which Alabama players are the most promising NFL prospects? There are mock drafts for 2025 that currently don’t feature any Alabama players, except guard Tyler Booker. Of course, they have plenty of players that will be drafted somewhere, including quarterback Jalen Milroe, center Parker Brailsford, cornerback Domani Jackson, safety Keon Sabb and linebacker Deonte Lawson.

The Badgers’ injury report contains few surprises, and that’s good news for Wisconsin. Running back Tawee Walker, who was listed as questionable last week but then did not play against South Dakota, is not on the report at all this week. Freshman cornerback Xavier Lucas, one of the team’s most promising freshmen, left the game against South Dakota early due to injury but also does not appear on the list.

Wide receiver Quincy Burroughs, who was out last week, also appears to be available today.

The two players who Are Tight end Riley Nowakowski and backup right tackle Barrett Nelson are considered questionable. Nowakowski has played in each of the first two games this season and has two catches for 22 yards, both against Western Michigan in Week 1. Nelson has appeared in one game this year.

The players not included include Joe Griffin, a transfer receiver who will not play in 2024, freshman linebacker Thomas Heiberger, transfer defensive lineman Leyton Nelson, freshman tight end Rob Booker and veteran defensive lineman James Thompson Jr., who is dealing with a long-term injury. None of these names are a surprise.

Linebacker Jake Chaney will also miss the first half for Wisconsin after being ejected last week for targeted attack. USC transfer Tackett Curtis filled in admirably for Chaney.
