After an impressive 27-0 victory over Canyon Springs on Saturday, the Carson High School football team hopes to make another statement on Friday away at Spring Creek (0-1).

The Spartans of Spring Creek hope to rebound from a 42-7 loss to Galena in their first game of the season.

Every first game of the season shows teams what they need to work on. For the Senators, it’s about re-establishing a dominant defensive performance while also finding rhythm on offense.

It will be a real road trip for the Senators, as they will spend almost 4.5 hours on the bus each way until kickoff on Friday.

It seems unlikely that Carson needs a big push, as they already got one in their home opener after dominating Canyon Springs.

There were a lot of playmakers to keep an eye on in the Senators’ opening game.

Defensively, Carson’s pursuit of the football has set the bar high for the season.

Ean Thomas, who forced a fumble late in the second quarter, made a spectacular play to reach a receiver at the 4-yard line after he broke free.

This effort allowed the Senators defense to hold up at the goal line and fend off four consecutive Pioneers running plays before gaining possession of the ball.

With Johnathan Alvarado’s two interceptions – one of which nearly scored a touchdown – he’s another player to watch on defense against the Spartans.

On offense, Carson ran for 118 yards and threw for another 59 yards, which still leaves room for improvement.

Head coach Ryan Boshard and his team would certainly like to see more from the offensive unit after another week of training.

Spring Creek had problems with turnovers in its first game against Galena – the Spartans threw four interceptions – and thus gave the Senators another chance to let off steam on defense.

Overall, Spring Creek was still able to cover 265 yards on offense, with the division between passing and running being almost even.

Joseph Bright was the Spartans’ best ball carrier with 78 yards on 19 carries.

Kickoff on Friday evening at Spring Creek High School is scheduled for 7 p.m.
