Woman dies at Chicago airport after getting stuck in baggage carousel

A terrible tragedy occurred at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. According to CNN, firefighters were called to the airport early this morning. There was a report that someone was trapped in the machinery used to transport and sort luggage. Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, said they found a 57-year-old woman caught in the luggage compartment’s conveyor belt system.

Langford further stated that the baggage area is not open to the public. It is currently unclear how the woman got there. Scott Allen, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor, stated that an “Occupational Safety and Health Administration official visited the scene and learned that the woman was not an airport employee.”

The firefighters then turned the crime scene over to the police. The Chicago Police Department’s communications department said in an email that the woman was found unconscious. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. The police communications department initially said the woman was discovered five hours before firefighters and paramedics arrived.

However, it was later clarified that surveillance footage showed the woman walking through the luggage compartment at the time. Her official death was not confirmed until five hours later, at which point the emergency call was made.

The only footage available shows the woman entering the luggage compartment. Investigators are trying to determine exactly what happened to her. An autopsy will soon be performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office to officially determine the woman’s cause of death.

Two years ago, per PEOPLEAn airport worker died after her hair got caught in a machine. According to the outlet, “her hair became entangled in a belt loader – a machine used to move luggage on and off an airplane – resulting in fatal injuries.”

At the time, Thompson was in the process of retrieving luggage from a plane. Her family was understandably devastated.

“She loved basketball. … She was my little girl. Everyone loved her,” said Angela Dorsey, Jermani Thompson’s mother. Thompson’s sister-in-law also spoke about the tragedy.

“She went to work one morning and never came home,” Nichole Branch said. “It’s just so unreal right now.”
