The Chicago Fire Department was called to O’Hare Airport around 7:45 a.m. because a woman was “trapped in machinery” in the baggage area of Terminal 5.

The woman was caught in the baggage conveyor belt, the fire department said. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Chicago police said video showed the woman, who did not work at the airport, entering an unoccupied restricted area around 2:30 a.m. Her body was found hours later.

Police confirmed that the woman had apparently stayed at the airport overnight, but why she sneaked into the employee-only area remains a mystery.

Authorities said the area where the incident occurred was off-limits to employees and was considered safe but not a high-security area. It was full of conveyor belts that transport baggage to and from planes in the international terminal, which also go through customs.

While the woman’s age was initially given as around 40, police clarified that she was 57. Her name was not released.

Police have not said whether they were able to track the woman’s activities between 2:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

Helicopter 7 was over the accident scene at around 9 a.m. and showed a large presence of first responders.

Chicago police are investigating her death. The Cook County coroner’s office has not yet released the identity of the woman who was killed. It is unclear where she lived or why she was at the airport.
