JACKSON COUNTY, Kentucky (WKYT/Gray News) – A woman died after a carjacking in Annville, Kentucky, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Daniel Isaacs said the carjacking occurred around 9:45 a.m. Saturday in front of the T-Mart gas station.
According to Isaacs, a suspect named Michael Edwards got out of a car with several other people. He then stole a truck that was parked at the gas station.
The victim ran outside, grabbed the handle of the truck and was dragged about 40 feet before Edwards ran her over, Isaacs said.
Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling said Tracy Clemmons was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph London Hospital
“This kind of thing doesn’t happen in this community,” said Michelle House, a T-Mart employee and friend of the victim. “She was just getting breakfast for her kids and going home, and it all happened so fast.”
The coroner believes Clemmons died from blunt force trauma to the head.
“Today there are children without a mother and a husband without a wife,” House added. “Tracy is truly loved and sorely missed, and we will always remember her here.”
The sheriff said Edwards drove for a while before abandoning the vehicle. Edwards also allegedly attempted to break into a home, pointed a gun at the person and then ran into the woods.
Edwards was eventually found after several hours of searching. According to Isaacs, he was arrested in a field on Cornett Chapel Road just before 3 p.m.
Edwards is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center. He is charged with murder, reckless endangerment, criminal damage, resisting arrest, repeated felony assault, auto theft and possession of a handgun as a convicted felon.
His bail is set at $1 million.
On Monday, the second arrest of a suspect named Richard Marcum took place.
Marcum is said to have been driving the vehicle that Edwards got out of before the car theft occurred.
According to the sheriff’s office, Marcum is accused of tampering with evidence and car theft.
London police drones were used in the search, with assistance from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police.
