When New York-based software developer Josh Wardle first Wordle He certainly had no idea he was about to launch a global sensation. In fact, Wardle said he initially developed the word puzzle just “for fun for me and my partner.”

After the release in October 2021 Wordle soon a passionate following throughout the English-speaking world. It was sold to The New York Times in January 2022 for an undisclosed low seven-figure sum.

In an interview with Newsweek Erhan Aslan, Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading in the UK, gave some advice on playing Wordle.

He said: “One thing I think is important in this game is the starting word you choose. It can be helpful to start with words that contain commonly used vowels, such as e and a, consonants such as r and t, and tone sequences. Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j or x, for example, may not be the best choice.

“Because you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonetics to narrow down or rule out some words they are thinking of. For example, if the second letter of the target word is l (marked in green) and the player thinks the word starts with a consonant, they need to know that there are only a few possibilities for consonant clusters (like bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl).”
