The first phase of work to build a street hockey court for the Washington Capitals at Solo Gibbs Park in Sharp-Leadenhall has been completed. The court, which is adjacent to the parking lots of M&T Bank Stadium and replaces a former basketball court, will also have basketball hoops and lines.

The approximately $150,000 project is being funded by the Washington Capitals, with commercial playground equipment manufacturer Kompman overseeing the project.

The goals and basketball hoops have been installed on the court along with the frame for the hockey walls. The court still needs to be resurfaced, marked for hockey and basketball and the final hockey walls installed.

Baltimore City Recreation and Parks expects the project to be completed by the end of the fall.

The idea for a street hockey court in the park was first introduced to the Sharp-Leadenhall community in 2020 by the Washington Capitals. The Washington Capitals have built 12 other street courts between Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and West Virginia.

The project is the latest improvement at Solo Gibbs Park in line with the master plan created in 2020. The first improvements were made in 2021 when one tennis court was resurfaced and one was removed to create additional green space. The former Sharp-Leadenhall Elementary School was demolished last year to make way for a future new recreation center and multi-use green space in the park.

Planned future improvements include rebuilding the other basketball courts and moving them slightly east to make room for a wider section of the Sharp Street Promenade of the Gwynns Falls Trail; building an additional playground; and creating a new “Hamburg Street Gateway” for access to the park at Hamburg St. and the “Cross Street Plaza” at Cross St. and Leadenhall St.
