CHICAGO (CBS) — Firefighters rescued a worker who fell into a well in Crown Point, Indiana, Wednesday morning.

Shortly after 10:00 a.m., firefighters responded to 129th Avenue and Mississippi Parkway, where a Crown Point city worker had fallen into a lift station—a well used to pump water—and become trapped.

It took rescue workers about an hour to remove the worker from the lift. The worker was flown by helicopter to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was treated for serious injuries.

“We train every day to keep our community safe, and our technical rescue team conducts training monthly for situations like this,” said Crown Point Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner Jr. “City employees are like family, and when it’s one of our own, it’s more personal. We’re thinking about that employee and their family.”

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been informed of the incident.
