Travel plans went up in smoke when a baggage scanner at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) caught fire, delaying a flight to Denpasar International Airport (DPS) in Bali.
Video footage of the incident, which occurred on August 6, 2024 at around 06:30 local time, was captured by a passenger arriving at Gate D46 and about to board Scoot flight TR280 to Bali.
The passenger who uploaded the video clip to TikTok wrote: “When you’re about to board your flight to Bali and the x-ray machine bursts into flames.”
The clip shows thick black clouds of smoke rising from the X-ray machine while flames can be seen below. A monitor displays the details of the flight to Bali, including a boarding time of 7:10 a.m.
Passengers can be seen standing in a line, looking on curiously. Some pull out their mobile phones and take photos and footage of the incident. Fire extinguishers have been used to fight the blaze. Another clip shows passengers fleeing the scene of the fire, covering their faces as smoke continues to envelop a large part of the terminal.
The Strait Times reported that two airport employees were able to extinguish the fire within 40 minutes. There were no injuries.
A Changi spokesman said the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
Scoot passengers were taken to another gate and were able to board their flight to Bali two hours later.
